Apple has discontinued the iPod, 20 years after it was released.

The US tech large said its iconic music player has been changed by other devices, making the iPod redundant.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide marketing, stated: "Today, the spirit of iPod lives on.

"We have integrated an incredible music expertise across all of our products, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and throughout Mac, iPad, and Apple TV.

"And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound quality with help for spatial audio - there is no higher strategy to take pleasure in, discover, and expertise music."

In October 2001, Steve Jobs debuted the original iPod and it was the primary MP3 player that could maintain 1,000 songs and had a 10-hour battery life.

"With iPod, Apple has invented an entire new category of digital music participant that allows you to put your total music assortment in your pocket and hearken to it wherever you go," he stated at the time.

"With iPod, listening to music will never be the same once more."

Similar MP3 players released by Microsoft and Sony didn't have the identical success because the iPod.

Apple has launched 5 versions of its music participant - the Traditional, Contact, Shuffle, Mini and Nano.

The corporate has been slowly killing its iPod range in recent years, with mobile phone know-how enabling customers to hearken to music providers on their telephones.

In 2014, the traditional click wheel model was discontinued, and the Shuffle and Nano have been killed off three years later.

The seventh-generation iPod contact was the one mannequin still on sale today.
