16-year-old arrested; planned capturing with explosives at Berkeley High, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to take part in a mass faculty taking pictures that could have included a bombing at Berkeley High School, police say. 

The teenager was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Division said in a press launch. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no school that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing harmful device supplies and threatening to commit against the law which can lead to demise or nice bodily damage.

Police stated they obtained a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a capturing that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police didn't say if the teenager was a scholar at Berkeley Excessive Faculty.

Upon executing the search warrant, police said they discovered elements to explosives and assault rifles, several knives, and electronic gadgets that could possibly be used to create extra weapons. 

At that point, a warrant was obtained for the teen's arrest.

"Faculty safety remains a high precedence for the division," police said in a statement. 

Particulars on whom the teenager was attempting to recruit were not disclosed. Police said this case stays below investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens instructed the school's neighborhood that the district was in shut contact with police during this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teenager's weapon components, the district relied on police experience to evaluate any potential ongoing danger to its faculties. The district communicated with police on the coed's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions during this period, we alerted our administrative and safety employees about this investigation and, as is our normal follow, maintained close contact with our BPD School Useful resource Officer on the Berkeley Excessive College campus," Stephens wrote. "Throughout the investigation period, we have been assured that this individual didn't pose a right away menace to the Berkeley High College group."

The district is conducting their very own investigation on this matter. 

The district could pursue disciplinary motion in opposition to the student.
