16-year-old arrested; planned capturing with explosives at Berkeley High, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to participate in a mass school shooting that would have included a bombing at Berkeley Excessive College, police say. 

The teen was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Division stated in a press release. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no school that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing destructive machine materials and threatening to commit a crime which is able to lead to loss of life or great bodily harm.

Police mentioned they received a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a capturing that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police did not say if the teen was a student at Berkeley Excessive Faculty.

Upon executing the search warrant, police said they found parts to explosives and assault rifles, a number of knives, and digital objects that could be used to create additional weapons. 

At that time, a warrant was obtained for the teenager's arrest.

"Faculty safety stays a excessive precedence for the department," police said in a statement. 

Particulars on whom the teenager was trying to recruit weren't disclosed. Police stated this case remains beneath investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens informed the college's neighborhood that the district was in close contact with police throughout this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teenager's weapon elements, the district relied on police expertise to evaluate any potential ongoing threat to its schools. The district communicated with police on the student's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions throughout this era, we alerted our administrative and security staff about this investigation and, as is our customary follow, maintained shut contact with our BPD School Useful resource Officer on the Berkeley Excessive Faculty campus," Stephens wrote. The district is conducting their very own investigation on this matter. 

The district might pursue disciplinary action against the student.
