Die Seitenbesitzer erkannten flott den Wert einer bevorzugten Listung in den Suchergebnissen und recht bald entwickelten sich Organisation, die sich auf die Aufwertung ausgerichteten. In den Anfängen bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt der Antritt oft zu der Übertragung der URL der geeigneten Seite an die vielfältigen Suchmaschinen im WWW. Diese sendeten dann einen Webcrawler zur Kritische Auseinandersetzung der Seite aus und indexierten sie.[1] Der Webcrawler lud die Internetseite auf den Webserver der Suchmaschine, wo ein weiteres Software, der die bekannten Indexer, Angaben herauslas und katalogisierte (genannte Ansprüche, Links zu anderweitigen Seiten). Die damaligen Varianten der Suchalgorithmen basierten auf Angaben, die anhand der Webmaster auch gegeben werden konnten, wie Meta-Elemente, oder durch Indexdateien in Suchmaschinen im Internet wie ALIWEB. Meta-Elemente geben einen Eindruck per Gehalt einer Seite, allerdings stellte sich bald heraus, dass die Anwendung dieser Details nicht vertrauenswürdig war, da die Wahl der genutzten Schlüsselworte durch den Webmaster eine ungenaue Erläuterung des Seiteninhalts wiedergeben hat. Ungenaue und unvollständige Daten in Meta-Elementen konnten so irrelevante Websites bei einzigartigen Recherchieren listen.[2] Auch versuchten Seitenersteller verschiedenartige Attribute innert des HTML-Codes einer Seite so zu beeinflussen, dass die Seite passender in Serps gefunden wird.[3] Da die zeitigen Suchmaschinen im WWW sehr auf Aspekte angewiesen waren, die alleinig in den Koffern der Webmaster lagen, waren sie auch sehr instabil für Missbrauch und Manipulationen in der Positionierung. Um bessere und relevantere Resultate in Serps zu bekommen, mussten wir sich die Besitzer der Suchmaschinen im WWW an diese Rahmenbedingungen angleichen. Weil der Gewinn einer Search Engine davon zusammenhängt, wichtige Suchergebnisse zu den gestellten Keywords anzuzeigen, vermochten untaugliche Ergebnisse darin resultieren, dass sich die User nach anderweitigen Chancen zur Suche im Web umschauen. Die Rückmeldung der Search Engines lagerbestand in komplexeren Algorithmen für das Rangordnung, die Punkte beinhalteten, die von Webmastern nicht oder nur nicht leicht lenkbar waren. Larry Page und Sergey Brin entworfenen mit „Backrub“ – dem Vorläufer von Die Suchmaschine – eine Suchseite, die auf einem mathematischen Routine basierte, der anhand der Verlinkungsstruktur Seiten gewichtete und dies in den Rankingalgorithmus eingehen ließ.
